Heard About Medicare’s GLP-1 Bridge?

GLP-1 medications have been making headlines, and now there’s a new Medicare program worth knowing about.
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program launched July 1, 2026, and may give some eligible Medicare beneficiaries access to certain GLP-1 medications for $50 per month when prescribed for weight management. The program is currently scheduled to run through December 31, 2027
4 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE GLP-1 BRIDGE
- Eligible beneficiaries may pay $50 for a monthly supply of certain GLP-1 medications through the Bridge program.
- You generally need eligible Medicare Part D coverage, meet CMS clinical requirements, and use the medication specifically for weight management. Your provider plays an important role in determining whether you meet the clinical criteria.
- The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is currently scheduled to run from July 1, 2026, through December 31, 2027.

THE PART THAT’S EASY TO MISS
The GLP-1 Bridge program does NOT go through your standalone PDP or MA-PD plan.
The GLP-1 Bridge program operates outside of your Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage. In other words, if you have a stand alone prescription drug plan or Medicare Advantage plan with Part D, the Bridge medication is not being billed to or covered by your Medicare plan. CMS is handling the program separately through a central processor. You must go through your provider to qualify.
Because it is outisde your Part D benefit, the $50 copay does not count toward your Part D out-of-pocket costs. Your Part D deductible does not apply.
THE BOTTOM LINE
If you’re currently taking-or considering-a GLP-1 medication, talk with your provider first to determine whether you qualify and if it may be appropriate for you.
