Becker, MN, is a community steeped in rich history, located in south-central Sherburne County. The township, consisting of 64 sections, is the largest in the county. The first permanent settler, Peter Vadnies, arrived in 1855 and established a trading post named Marsailles near the present-day NSP Plant. This marked the beginning of Becker’s development.
In 1856, more settlers, including Nobel R. Crawford, John Wagner, John Sadley, and John Curtiss, arrived and made claims northeast of what is now the City of Becker. Notably, Curtiss settled near the Elk River, and the rapids there still bear his name, Curtiss Rapids. Crawford, the first to settle in that area, moved with his wife Lucinda and their seven children. Their home quickly became a hub for the community, hosting Sunday worship services and the area’s first Sunday School, organized by Mrs. Crawford.
By the 1857 census, the population of Becker was recorded at 35 persons. The arrival of the railroad in 1867 significantly boosted the town’s growth, with the first depot being built in 1868 and later replaced by a modern depot in 1917, which served the community until 1969.
Other early settlers included notable names such as Andre Anderson (1866), Jens Peter Anderson (1869), Edward T. Cox (1877), and many others who contributed to the township’s development. Originally called Pleasant Valley, the township was officially organized on January 21, 1871, and named after Honorable G. L. Becker of St. Paul, a real estate agent for the railroad.
The first officers elected included George Eaton as Chairman and several other key figures who guided the township’s early governance. The board’s initial actions included building infrastructure such as a bridge across the Elk River, costing $350. The town hall, initially built in 1891 and later rebuilt in 1912 after a fire, became the center of community meetings and activities.
Throughout its history, Becker faced challenges such as maintaining roads in wet and lowland areas, requiring innovative solutions like corduroying with yellow tamarack logs. The township was also known for its agricultural productivity, particularly hay and potatoes, which became significant local industries.
In the late 1800s, Becker established a bank and a local newspaper, reflecting its growing economic and social development. The town celebrated its centennial in 1971 with a series of community events, highlighting its rich heritage.
The Northern States Power Company’s Sherco Plant, originally established in Becker Township, became part of the City of Becker in 1974 due to annexation for better services. The township’s governance expanded in 1978 from three to five supervisors to better manage its growth.
Today, Becker, MN, continues to honor its historical roots while embracing modern development, maintaining a strong sense of community and heritage.
